FRI. 12/9- ASME members toured a GE Power facility in Schenectady, NY. The tour was split into two groups, one that followed Collin through the steam turbine factory, and another led by Jim by the solar panel array and also the factory. Afterwards, both groups converged for a discussion of different power sources and the future of energy generation in the United States. Thanks to Jim and Collin from GE for setting up and leading the tour.
SAT. 10/17 – ASME takes a trip to Lake George through the Sleeping Beauty Trail. Braving the hail, wind, and rain, the group traversed 7.2 miles round trip, reaching an elevation of 2364 ft in 3:15:00.
WED. 10/7 – Members of ASME joined with members of SME to tour the GE Repairs and Development facility in Albany. This unassuming looking machine shop houses repairs for wind and steam turbines bearing the GE brand. The atmosphere and functionality of the facility is very unique; it is a small, fairly autonomous shop focused on solving problems, but with all the resources that come with being part of GE. The tour group learned about the differences between steam and wind power generation methods and industries (there are lots!), as well as the thought processes and techniques that go into repairs.
